Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, a referral from a local GP is needed for continuity of care.

You can self-book for the initial consultation here and a referral form can be downloaded here for your GP to complete.

At Illawarra TMS we are thrilled to provide the entire TMS course including the initial consultation and the MRI brain-scan at zero out of pocket expense. The treatment is covered by Medicare and we bulk bill the entire service.

Each session generally takes approximately 20-30 minutes.

35 treatment sessions. You will be asked to attend 3 to 5 treatment sessions each week until the 35 treatments are completed.

This varies patient to patient.  Some patients notice a difference following just a few sessions, while others improve towards the end of the treatment.

rTMS can be standalone or combined with both psychological therapy and medication treatments. Depending on your individual needs and preferences, you can benefit from all available treatments in combination, including rTMS.

The most commonly reported side effect or issue associated with TMS treatment is the discomfort felt as the scalp muscle twitches when the magnetic pulses pass through the scalp muscle. It is similar to the sensation of a TENS or EMS device. As the treatment sessions progress most patients adjust to the sensation as it becomes much less uncomfortable and more easily tolerated.

Similar to medication treatments for depression, there is a minimal risk that rTMS could trigger a mood switch to mania or, in very rare cases, induce a seizure in individuals predisposed to these conditions. These risks are thoroughly assessed before prescribing rTMS.

Overall, rTMS is significantly less likely to cause adverse side effects compared to most commonly prescribed antidepressant medications.

You will remain awake throughout the entire session. A TMS-Practitioner will administer the treatment and check in with you throughout the treatment process.

If you have any concerns during the treatment, it can be stopped immediately.

The session involves sitting in a chair while a small magnetic coil is precisely placed over the treatment target site, touching your scalp. This placement can be guided by MRI scans using our advanced neuro-navigator equipment.

When the treatment begins, you will hear a clicking noise and feel a tapping sensation on your scalp. The treatment session will last 20-30 minutes, after which you can resume your normal activities.

It is advised to wait at least one hour following the first session and 20 minutes following subsequent sessions before driving.

If you have metal in your brain, nasal/sinus cavities, or ears, such as aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, certain intracranial stents, or other embedded metal fragments, you cannot receive TMS treatment. Additionally, having a cardiac pacemaker is a contraindication.

Other factors, such as pregnancy, being under 18 years of age, and specific medical conditions, require careful consideration. The pros and cons must be weighed, and informed consent is necessary, especially for potential 'off-label' uses. It is also important to note that Medicare funding is not available for individuals under 18.

TMS treatment does not have any impact on memory.  In fact, since depression and anxiety can interfere with memory, there's a good chance your memory will actually improve!

TMS treatment will not effect your weight.
